GOAL 1: No Poverty
GOAL 2: Zero Hunger
Collect money to the people in need
Since 2016 our students have participated The Hunger Day by collecting money to Finnish Red Cross. Here you can read more about this year’s collection:
Avoid throwing away food
At lower grades in our school the teachers have organized a competition in school canteen. It’s about which class has the least biowaste after the school lunch. We plan to have a similar competition for the whole school.
The students that live at the school dormitory may take leftover food from the school canteen to their apartments, so we don’t have to throw it away.
GOAL 3: Good Health and Well-being
Student care
In Finland all the students have a healthy school lunch for free. We also provide student health care (inclusive psychological help) for free, and the vaccinations are given by the school nurse.
Well-being
We try to increase the sense of community among the students. The student body organizes theme days five times during the school year, and the purpose is to do something different outside of the classroom together. On the latest theme day, the students first had Laser Tag together, and afterwards they baked gingerbread houses in groups.
A couple of times a year, we also have extra theme days for sports. This December we spent half of the day at sports hall where we played badminton, tennis and floorball and some of the students went to the gym.
GOAL 4: Quality Education
GOAL 5: Gender Equality
In our school we have made an equality plan. We also have a team of teachers that work for equality and they are going to have a survey about equality issues in our school. After getting the results they will update the plan. All the teachers must follow the plan.
In our school all the toilets are unisex which also increases the gender equality.
GOAL 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
GOAL 7: Affordable and Clean Energy
Our school has solar panels on the roof and inside we have a monitor on the wall from which you can see how much energy the panels product every day.
In every toilet at the school there is a poster reminding us to shut down the lights.
GOAL 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
GOAL 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
This December we visited the refuse dump and recycling center in Oulu. At the center the domestic rubbish is used to make fuel and to district heating to warm the houses and water. Rest of the trash is recycled in detail. You can read more about the visit here: https://spsusustainablegoals.blogspot.com/2019/12/themedays-2019.html
At school we increase the usage of digital materials in studying, and most of the essays and other homework are returned to the teacher digitally. We also provide the study books that are used again year after year.
GOAL 10: Reduced Inequality
We have a team of teachers that works for equality, well-being and against bullying. Any discrimination is taken seriously.
GOAL 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
Oulu is taking care of sustainable development in many ways. For example, the network of bicycle routes is one of the largest in Finland, and Oulu invests to have biking possibilities year-around. The city also provides city bikes for cheap price.
GOAL 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
At the school we have recycling bins for paper, metal and biowaste. We plan to increase the possibilities for recycling so that we’d also have bins for glass, cardboard and plastic.
At lower grades we have home economics as compulsory subject where the students learn responsible consumption.
GOAL 13: Climate Action
In our school the students have a right to participate the global school strikes for climate.
GOAL 14: Life Below Water
In September we participated so called trash run. We ran (or walked) around the city and picked up litter from the streets and parks. At the end of the run the trashes were weighted and the team that had the heaviest bag got a price. Here you can read more of the run:
GOAL 15: Life on Land
We take the students out to the nature. This December we went hiking and grilled sausages at bonfire in the forest. You can read more about it here: https://spsusustainablegoals.blogspot.com/2019/12/themedays-2019.html
GOAL 16: Peace and Justice Strong Institutions
Every year we participate the School Day of Non-Violence and Peace that is celebrated on January 30th, on the anniversary of the death of Mahatma Gandhi.
GOAL 17: Partnerships to achieve the Goal
We are participating the Erasmus+ project “Stepping Up to the Sustainable Development Goals”. We also co-operate with other schools.
