Assignment for the meeting in Braga

Before the next meeting in Braga we had an assignment to do. In the last meeting in Melilla we talked about the litter in the sea and on the beaches, and decided to make an experiment: We would crop an area of 5 m * 10 m on the beach and examinate the sand inside the borders. We would sort out all the trash we find and write the information in an application called Marnoba.

As you can imagine the task was not so easy to complete in the Finnish winter but the current winter has been low-snowy and we did find some sandy areas on the beach. The day we had chosen to do the task was stormy and rainy which made the work even more exiting. :)

We found some plastic, rests of the fireworks, imptregnated wood, clothes, cigarette ends and even bio waste.

During the summer we would definitively find more litter on the beach. It is sad to see all that trash. There are a lot of trash bins at Nallikari beach where we were doing our experiment, but some people just decide not to use them and leave the trash in the nature instead.

How can we stop littering on the beaches? Share your ideas in the comment field below!

Long Term Student Exchange

Within the Erasmus+ project "Stepping up to the Sustainable Development Goals" we have got an opportunity for long term student exchanges. Our exchange partner school is Lycée Antoine de Saint-Exupery in La Reunion. Before the pandemic we had a couple of Reuionise students in Laanila High School, and our Erik and Sissel spent two months in La Reunion.

Here's a video about experiences in long term students exchange program between Finland and La Reunion: https://video214.com/play/OgykLCX8VL0jOooipUlKtQ/s/dark

During the winter 2021-2022 we could continue even the long term exchanges. First, a group of Laanila students spent a month in the tropic. When they travelled back they took a group of Reunionise students with them. Some of the students went to Laanila High School, and we got lovely students Justine and Lila to our school.

Justine and Lila participated some of the lessons and experienced not only the Finnish school life but also the arctic winter with husky rides and snowboarding. We really enjoyed having them with us and learned a lot from them. <3
